SATELLITE SERVICING PROJECTS DIVISION INTERNSHIP
JOB SUMMARY
Assisted Robotic Refueling Mission 3 at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center for the Satellite Servicing Projects Division. My primary object was to use PTC Creo to design adapter plates so that various avionics boxes for the mission could be vibration tested. This also required me to act as the liaison between the various engineers, analysts, and technicians to make sure everyone was on the same page. I also performed additional supporting work with CREO, research, flight hardware, and GSE.
BACKGROUND AND GOALS
•Acoustic environments during launch cause high levels of vibration in payloads. Extensive vibration testing prior to launch ensures that equipment functionality is not affected.
•The avionics boxes for RRM3 (Robotic Refueling Mission 3) need random vibration testing in all 3 axis in addition to sine burst testing to assure adequate strength. My objective was to design adapter plates to mount these boxes to the shaker tables in building 10 and some offsite.
•The key constraint was to minimize the size and number of plates that need to be manufactured, while maximizing the integrity of the connection to the shaker table.

CHALLENGES FACED AND THINGS LEARNED
• Learned how manufacturing effects 3D modeling
• Learned PTC CREO for the first time
• Made sure that plates were still structurally sound with various shaker table holes blocked
• Cut into plates to make room for torque wrenches to access bolts
• Picked fasteners, washers, and helical inserts for various hole sizes and depths
• Learned who and what is involved in getting things designed and built
• Learned what it takes to coordinate between the various disciplines (I&T, safety, analysis, machinists, technicians, ect…)
• Learned GD&T dimensioning
